Who We Are

Sangha refers to a community learning about Buddhism and practicing together. Members of the Shield Sanga study, learn and meditate together. Our levels of experience range from those curious about meditation to decades-long practitioners.

We are not affiliated with a particular lineage in Buddhism. Members have studied Soto Zen, Tibetan, Vipassana, Insight, Transcendental Meditation and others. All are welcome. We think of our sangha as the one-room schoolhouse of Buddhism.

Membership is informal. We have a mailing list you can join to receive notifications about our activities (see link below). All we ask is to remain respectful and kind during our meetings.

Shield Sangha and the Pema Group started in 2004 with a small group of friends studying and discussing books by the beloved Buddhist teacher, Pema Chödrön. After sponsoring a workshop with Khenmo Drolma, Abbess of Vajra Dakini Nunnery at which 80 people attended in 2008, there was demand to move the group out of the living rooms of the participants into a larger venue.
